A traumatic brain injury (TBI) occurs when a sudden physical force disrupts normal brain function. This can happen from a blow, bump, or jolt to the head or from an object that pierces the skull. Not every head injury causes a TBI, but when the brain is affected, the consequences can range from a brief change in mental clarity to severe, life-altering damage. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), TBI is a major cause of death and disability in the United States, contributing to roughly 69,000 deaths annually. It’s not a rare edge case it’s a public health reality that touches millions of lives each year. The brain is the control center for everything you think, feel, and do. When it sustains trauma, the ripple effects can touch every part of your life. What Causes a Traumatic Brain Injury? TBI doesn’t happen in a vacuum. The most common causes include: Violence, including domestic abuse, is also a significant but underreported cause. Shaken baby syndrome is a severe form of TBI caused by violently shaking an infant. Who Is Most at Risk? TBI doesn’t discriminate, but some groups face higher risk. Children under 4 and adults over 75 have the highest rates of TBI-related hospitalizations.
