Assimilation occurs when a person interprets new information using existing knowledge or schemas. In this process, new experiences are fitted into what the individual already knows. For instance, if a child sees a raccoon for the first time and calls it a “cat,” the child is using an existing animal schema to understand the new object. Assimilation helps maintain stability in our understanding of the world.
4. Accommodation
Accommodation occurs when existing schemas must be changed or new schemas must be created to understand new information. This happens when a new experience cannot fit into an existing mental structure. Using the previous example, when the child learns that the raccoon is not a cat, the child modifies the existing schema and creates a new category for raccoons. Accommodation allows thinking to become more accurate and sophisticated.
5. Equilibration
Equilibration is the process of maintaining a balance between assimilation and accommodation. When individuals encounter information that does not match their current understanding, they experience a state of disequilibrium, which creates cognitive discomfort. To restore balance, they adjust their thinking through assimilation or accommodation. This process drives cognitive development because it motivates individuals to refine their understanding of the world.4
